Happiness: Visitor or Constant Companion?


Where is your anchor?  Why can some touch you for only a moment?  Why do others receive your scent in the span of a blink?  You are a legend, a brilliant source of nutrients for the mind and soul.  You seep into our chambers.  You ignite and empower new energy in our bodies.  You open the window, allowing one to see new dreams across the landscape. Happiness, we crave you!  We desire your heart for more than a visitation.  We need sustainable presence.  Your absence is an invitation for intruders to fill your space.  Claim your space.  Those who know you, refuse to let you become a stranger.  So inspire our words, that other others will learn and discover you as a nutrient, a constant companion, a song in the heart, that allows us to dance and sing during our earthly journey. – – by Sheldon

I’ve discovered so much about the depth of unhappiness in the lives of so many people over the years.  What I’ve learned is magnified as a holistic health coach when  investigating what’s going on in the lives of my clients.  I often ask, ‘are you happy’?

The most alarming belief among some, is that happiness is something like a gift, an occurrence that happens to land on one’s doorstep but not something they can create and manifest.  Actor Denzel Washington’s character in Equalizer, says to a young woman,  “create your own world”.  The woman has singing talent but she is a prostitute.  The message to her, you are not defined by nor confined to a dark circumstance in your life.

I often say that I live everyday like a vacation, meaning I have a variety of activities and lifestyle practices that bring happiness, calmness, clarity and empowerment.  And on those off days when happiness is interrupted, I still see through the ‘intruder’, knowing my happiness is well within reach.

When offering ways to capture happiness, I often share the power of self love with my clients, the ability to place supreme value on your mind & body, seek out those wonderful passions in life that bring joy; make them constant placements in life, not dreams.  It’s about claiming a measure of goodness that is ours,  to which we are entitled.

Happiness encompasses an enormous spectrum, defined in many ways for many people; too much for people to be without it.  However, many are living lives absent of happiness.  For those who experience it regularly, try engaging in an act of kindness to spread happiness to others so it flows like a cascade honey.

Happiness is a green smoothie


Okay, so my title sounds a bit simplistic, but let me explain. To me, happiness DOES begin with a glass of green smoothie in the morning. Why do I know this? Because big health changes happened to me a few years ago when I decided to add this small shift into my morning routine.

You may be asking, “What is so great about a green smoothie?” Well, first let me explain what a green smoothie is. When I talk about green smoothies, I’m really talking about starting your day with a blended serving of 3-5 green leafy vegetables. Green smoothies are all about getting more greens-and a diverse combination of greens-into your body. I often suggest the ratio of 75/25% vegetables to fruit ratio, and add a nut milk or filtered water for a base. Our body CRAVES vegetables, and when we give our bodies valuable phytonutrients first thing in the morning, our whole world changes. Our bodies feel stronger, our mental clarity increases, and our thoughts and emotions become more positive. There is no doubt that you will feel immediate benefits after having your first smoothie of the morning. I always like to “dare” my friends and clients to start the day with a green smoothie and not feel fabulous-it’s a safe bet on my part!

What are some other benefits of smoothies?

-Green smoothies are full of a variety of complex vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

-Green smoothies taste like a glass of pure energy, coming straight from the sun. Plants are super charged by the sun’s energy, and when we take this living energy into our bodies, our cells start to respond!

-Plants give off oxygen as a by-product, and our cells thrive on oxygen and use it for cellular respiration. Disease thrives in an oxygen-depleted environment.

-Green leafy vegetables help our bodies to stay in an alkaline state-it has been hypothesized that when a body tends towards acidity, it is more likely to become sick.

-When vegetables and fruit are already broken down by the blending process, they are easily assimilated into the digestive system, and may be more easily absorbed.

-Smoothies help with hydration and the cleansing of the bowel.

-Green smoothies feed the good bacteria in the gut.

-Green smoothies detoxify, fight inflammation, energize, and promote healing.

-When we start with a green smoothie, we are setting a positive tone for the rest of the day. We may be less likely to make bad food choices. Perhaps we are less likely to have our 2nd or 3rd cup of coffee or to follow up with a breakfast of pancakes or donuts.

You can start with any combination of green leafy vegetables and fruit, but I find that many like to start with one simple recipe, and then build from there. I’d like to share with you one of my favorite green smoothie recipes:

Green Goddess
20 oz
3/4 cup frozen mango
1 frozen banana (peel before freezing)
1 cup fresh spinach
1 cup fresh kale, lightly packed
1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1 piece ginger root
Drink for: Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory, Digestion

So, I “dare” you to include green smoothies into your morning routine. I dare you to give your body a chance to answer you back when you flood it with the vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that it craves. My wish for you is that you also feel the amazing benefits that I felt years ago when I added this important habit into my morning routine. Starting the day with a green smoothie may make you a happier and more positive person, and a green smoothie has the power to literally change the way that you view and interact with the world.
