Happiness Is A Choice

Each day we awaken with the opportunity to spread joy and be happy. Some days that proves to be more challenging than others. Sometimes it seems like the universe is conspiring against us, and making it very difficult to find a reason to feel happy. But although we may not have control over many of the circumstances in our lives or the actions and attitudes of others, we do have control over the way we respond in terms of our own actions and attitudes. It’s easy to blame other people or specific circumstances for our unhappiness, but the truth is that we have free will, and no one can make us feel something that we don’t choose to feel. Don’t get me wrong, that choice can be challenging at times, but it’s a choice worth making!

We tend to think that people or things will bring us happiness. “If I could only have (fill in the blank), then I’d be really happy.” But have you ever noticed that kind of happiness is short lived? We may feel wildly happy when we get what we want, but soon thereafter we are back in the position of longing for something new to bring us happiness. Imagine how wonderful it would feel if you could simply BE happy!

I believe that we are designed to be happy, and that it’s in our true nature to default to happiness. All we have to do is choose to let go of negative thoughts that are not serving us.   I’d like to encourage you to take control of your own happiness. Make a conscious effort to be happy. Look for the silver lining in every adverse situation. Nearly everything has beauty when viewed in the right light. Change the lens and notice how the picture changes. Keep in mind that joy is in you, even if you have to dig to find it. Simply hold on to even one happy thought and you will fly! Set a higher standard for your thoughts, and then notice how your view of the world changes!
